Midwifery:to define Midwifery is a profession whose practice is based on scientific, technological knowledge and evidence base practice.

Midwife: A midwife is a graduatefrom a recognized program of midwifery, enabling her/his to provide safe and competent midwifery services. She / he functions independently, dependently and interdependently in providing, promoting and maintaining services to the pregnant woman and her family in a variety of setting such as home, hospital and Basic Health Unit.

The philosophy of including midwifery in the curriculum is in the belief that parenthood is an important developmental stage in life with the responsibility for child rearing that can be provided by each and every member of the family. Father and mother in a family play a nurturing role and are responsible for the proper development of the family. The health need of the woman before, during and after pregnancy and also the father’s understanding of these needs are important determinants in fulfilling the nurturing role.

The responsibility for providing and maintaining quality maternal health services lies in the health services of the society and the community in which the resides.
