Community
Background
Community Health includes the study of health and disease in the population of defined communities or groups in order to identify their health needs, and to plan, implement, and evaluate health programs to effectively meet these needs.Community Medicine reaches out to the people to provide services for prevention of diseases such as immunization, pre-natal care, health screening etc.; promotion of health such as safe water supply and sanitation, vector control measures, tobacco control policy etc.; and provision of primary medical care such as treatment of common ailments like diarrhea, ARI, malaria etc.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Community Health is to pursue excellence in teaching, research
and contribute to health promotion and disease prevention, by providing a scholarly environment for community health sciences that
- Stimulates and enhances learning
- Expands knowledge and understanding by conducting action research
- Community-based service provision including underserved population
- Fostering of appropriate partnership for the promotion of public health at local and nationallevels
- Offers professional expertise and consultant advice to persons and agencies in other fields that need these forms of help
Objectives
The Department is responsible for teaching various programs such as two years Certificate Programme for Health Assistants, 3 years diploma in General Nursing and teaching the two years in-service Bachelors degree programme for Public Health (BPH) etc.We contribute by teaching courses, supervising students and by membership on the various committees.
In all these activities, the objective of the Department remains to facilitate the achievement of the main goal of the Institute is to produce competent Health care and in numbers required to meet the health care needs of the nation at all levels of the health care delivery system.
Our department, which is an interdisciplinary department, comprises of members with a wide variety of academic backgrounds and interests. Since 2010, the department has doubled the number of faculty from 4 full-time members to nine as of now. We look forward to the future challenges and expect that the department will continue to grow and make valuable contributions to further improve RIHS and in particular to the Royal University of Bhutan.
